Abstract

This study analyzes the importance of the Serbian Orthodox Church that considers identity and survival of the Serbian people for the last eight centuries. Since receiving the independence-autocephaly, Serbian Orthodox Church until the present day it has been not only a spiritual but also a great midpoint center considering existence of the Serbian people. Even during periods when most of the Serbian people lived in foreign countries, especially during the period of slavery under the Turks and subordination under the Habsburgs and Venetians, the SOC through the Patriarchate of Peć, the Karlovac Archibishopry, and its other regional religious centers (Archibishopry in restored Principality of Serbia, Montenegro etc.), acted as spiritual and general connection considering survival of the Serbian people. The SPC was of great importance in the modern restoration of Serbian unity. At this time during difficult challenges and crises, the SOC is an enormous support to the Serbian identity and protection of Kosovo and Metohija, and of all-Serbian unity. It connects the Serbian people in the region as well in diaspora.
