INTERNATIONAL POSITION AND GOALS OF SERBIA

At the end of 20th century Serbia was faced with international political and economic isolation, wars in close environment and bombing of NATO alliance. Because of previous mentioned the goals its foreign policy at the begining of 21th century were to normalized the relations with the western countries, to engage the proces of european integration and to get over of the period of economic regression by intensive economic development. At this moment Serbia is largely in the process of accession to the European Union by opening 12 of the 35 Chapters of membership negotiations. However between Serbia and US and the EU as their most important ally, there are a conflict of interests regarding the status of Kosovo and Republika Srpska within Bosnia and Herzegovina. Previosly brings Serbia in postion to seek protection of Russia as its tarditional ally in the UN when there is a vote about these issues. Therfore, the international position of Serbia is extremly complex because it is crucified between defending its national and european interests. It remains to be seen whether the imperatives of joining the Union will force Serbia to harmonize its foreign policy with the foreign policy of the European Union.
