Abstract

Although the European parliamentary elections in France have somewhat less importance than national ones, several political phenomena have drawn public attention. First of all, the turnout is 50%, which means that it was higher by an overall 8 percentage points compared to the 2014 elections. The heightened interest of voters can be explained by the shock that caused the events related to "Brexit" and the existential threat of the European Union. National Party Marin Le Pen's victory with 23.3% of the votes won is relative if we take into account that she won fewer votes than the 2014 elections and a slight margin in comparison to the second-placed “Republic on the move” with 22.4%. The result of the Macron's list is not so bad considering the months of massive and sometimes violent protests of "yellow vests." The ”Green Party” made a great surprise, as according to the forecasts it should have achieved 9 and won over 13% of the votes. The surprisingly bad result was achieved by the “Republicans” with only 8.5 % of the votes cast against the 15% predicted, and the list of Unsetlled France and its leader, Jean-Melenchon, with 6% of the vote. The former ruling Socialist Party of France, as the last one, nevertheless managed to enter the European Parliament.
