Abstract

Alienation of personality and the quest for community are central motives of the whole modern culture: social sciences define them as the state of social relations in which the level of integration and common values are low while the high level of distance and even isolation between individuals and groups prevails; the cultural production describes them as numerous states of helplessness, uselessness, anomy, self-alienation and mental disturbances. The paper observes images of overcoming of alienation and creation of community that are described in Chuck Palahniuk’s novel ”Fight Club” and its David Fincher’s cinematic adaptation. This work analyzes representations of ”Fight Club”’s masculinity and community, their ideal and philosophical models opposed to the modern consumeristic concepts, and gives critical review of alternatives showed by these images.
