Abstract

This paper will present a historical context, the organization, the functioning of the opium economy in Afghanistan, as well as the analysis of dependence of the economic security of the rural population on the cultivation, processing and trafficking of opium. Then it will analyze the causes of the emergence and development of the opium economy, as well as the factors that have contributed to this system of criminal activities which become the dominant economic sector in Afghanistan. Through the focus of the paper points to the basic features of the system and method of functioning of the opium economy in Afghanistan, the complex nature of the relationship of economic security of individuals and the opium economy.

Substantial changes that have occurred in the security architecture of the international system after the end of the Cold War reduced the risk of a conflict of global proportions, as the likelihood of major inter-state conflict. However, a rising tide of intrastate ethnic and religious conflicts, mass population migration, global expansion of terrorism and organized crime, the widening gap between rich and poor and intensify of the process of marginalization of certain groups and communities, forced the international and scientific community to re-examine the traditional perception of security in an effort to find practical solutions and policy responses to the changing nature of the challenges, risks and threats. The economic security of the population in Afghanistan is very vulnerable, given that about 36% of the entire population or about 9 million people, is unable to meet their basic needs, while the standard of a large part of the population is directly above the poverty line, which makes it very sensitive in any deterioration of living conditions.

The practical significance of this research is contained in an effort to issue the problem of cultivation, processing and trafficking of opium in Afghanistan, viewed from the perspective of economic security of the individual, taking into account the importance of the opium economy, not only as a source of income, but also as a source of secure market access, arable land, water, credits, food and employment.
