ASSASSINS : TERRORISTS FROM ALAMUT
Keywords:
Islamistic terrorism, Assassins, Medieval sect, dogma, ideologyAbstract
Within the local academic community, and less frequently in papers published in foreign languages, the origin of Islamistic terrorism is linked to the medieval sect of Assassins. This paper aims to briefly present relevant facts about this sect, its origins, dogma, ideology and its organisational structure. It also intends to point to some opinions that challenge the common belief of Assassins as the precursors of what is today defined as and meant by the term Islamistic terrorism. A number of authors challenge the viewpoint of Assassins as the first terrorists in the Islamic civilisation. Moreover, they emphasise the thesis that the current idea of this sect results from the subsequent, biased intervention of numerous authors, especially those whose writing about Assassins is guided by nonscientific motifs and romanticised image of this sect.
