Циљ овог рада јесте да прикаже феномен канибализма кроз етимологију самог назива, митолошке приче и облике манифестације. Упркос томе што је канибализам документован и заступљен у свим регијама света, од периода постојања homo-erectus-а до савременог доба, не постоји много научних радова у вези са овом темом, нарочито ако се узме у обзир количина евиденције канибализма и историјска заступљеност овог феномена. У раду су представљене европске интерпретације канибализма староседелачких народа и различити описи канибализма у античкој митологији, народним песмама и легендама. Кроз историју, канибализам је био саставни део расистичких стереотипа и приписивања људождерских карактеристика староседелачким народима Новог Света. Племена Јужне Америке и остали староседеоци вековима су жртве етикетирања и лажних и искривљених слика о њиховој канибалистичкој пракси, стога је посвећена посебна пажња томе, у раду. Након тога, дати су описи канибалистичких мотива, који су заступљени у митологијама, легендама, народним причама и поезији различитих култура. На крају рада дата је типологија облика манифестације канибализма.
