ECOLOGICAL CRISIS AND THE MAIN DETERMINANTS OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Keywords:
Ecological crisis, sustainable development, social capital, human ecology and participationAbstract
In the introductory part of the paper we elaborate on the challenges that have arisen as a result of scientific progress and the creation of new tehnologies as the immediate consequance is the current ecological crisis. In addition, it will be shown how capitalism brings new weighing between material value and humanism – which could imply the hypothesis under the influence of capital(ism) natural ecological balance is more and more damaged. In the domain of scientific progress, attention will be paid to the ecopsychology, as the ecological movement and a new discipline that have pretensions to awaken a sense of reciprocity between environment and man.
All this implies the need for long-term mainteiance of the natural (and social) welfare, ie. for sustainable development and it will be contextualized in the central part of the paper. In addition, the work tends to analyze and critially examine social capital, human ecology and citizen participation as a major determinant of suistainable development, and without strengthening these determinants suistainable development is not possible. The last and the final chapter addresses the needs of deep structural changes of the society and the way it works, all in order to respond to the ecological crisis and archieve sustainable development in practice.
