Abstract

During its long history, the Balkans, often being presented as a specific geopolitical "cross”, has been considered a place of collision of miscellaneous civilizations, a zone of movement in all directions, a battlefield and a place of victories and sufferings. From a geopolitical point of view, it is a very interesting territory, with all the attributes of a strategically significant area. The historical destiny of the people living in this area has been created by the interests of the world's centers of power in accordance with the epoch. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to indicate the sufferings and bloody outbursts of the 20th century, which came as a result of the process of "balkanization" in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The nineties are prime example of unequivocally controlled conflicts, secessionism, the creation of synthetic nations and new states, myths and "humanitarian" interventions. We will try to create a picture of both regional and non-regional interest, by defining the basic concepts, analyzing the Balkans from a geopolitical point of view, presenting the previously used methods in the process of "balkanization" and ,finally, by locating the desired goals.
