Насиље у породици је једно од најгорих друштвених појава, имајући у виду погубне последице које оставља на психу жртава, јер је онај ко их је повредио истовремено особа која би треба да искаже љубав, а друго, то је особа од које се често не може побећи. Мушкарци су све чешће жртве, али су најчешће, и то у превалентној мери, извршиоци насиља. Што је већи ступањ родне неравноправности у друштву, то је шанса да дође до насиља у породици већа. У Западним земљама је већина насиља у породици стављена ван закона, али је у другим цивилизацијама веома често овакво насиље, и сматра се или законски или обичајно прихватљивим. Најнеугодније је што се жртве насиља у породици даље формирају као особе склоне да то насиље и понове или оправдају.
