As a digital media, Internet fundamentally changes the structure and ethics of journalistic profession. One of the most important questions of journalistic theory and practice nowadays is efficiency of ethical standards inherited from traditional print media in a changed, information environment. Starting from the normative character of social responsibility of media, we analyzed achievements of media self-regulation. The aim of the paper is to examine the relation between the code of ethics and the journalistic profession, using the critical and analytical methods. The subject has been set in the narrative framework that consists of questions: how to improve quality and responsibility of media?; what are the most important ethical standards of journalism in the digital age?; what is the sense of media self-regulation on online platforms?.
We conclude that journalism in Serbia shows examples of breaching of ethical and professional standards. We notice the lack of media self-regulation power, which requests overcoming by measures: strengthening the co-regulation media policy and independent regulatory bodies; introduction of subject Media literacy in the compulsory education.
