DEMOGRAPHIC TRENDS IN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES: MOVING TOWARD DEPOPULATION OF THE CONTINENTAL PERIPHERIA

According to the latest UN estimates, the number of Europeans will decline continuously in the coming decades. Looking at the existing indicators, it can be concluded that this trend will change after 2150, when the population will start to increase. Contrary to the reduction of the population of European countries, in other parts of the World (above all in Africa), the population will constantly increase. This leads us to the creation of a new demographic (dis)balance between the Global North and the Global South. Especially vulnerable are the countries of the „European periphery“. European periphery (South-East European countries) will be exposed to accelerated depopulation in the coming years. It is a important threat not only for national security of those states, but for Europe as well.
