Abstract

The position of the Balkan peninsula on the "big chessboard" should not be underestimated. The Balkans is a significant area for both - thalassocratic and telurocratic projections. It is an integral part of the Inner Crescent and Rimland. Interconnection of two irreconcilable concepts takes place on the Balkan Peninsula, and in this context, the role of radical Islamist groups is also considered. The paper consists of five parts. The first, introductory part is a brief overview of previous works on this topic, including a critique of extremely simplified views on "geography of Islam" or "geography of Islamic learning". The second part describes the key objectives of Atlantism as a geopolitical conception, and in the third explains the notion of "the geography of radical Islam". Using the analytical-synthetic method in the fourth chapter, the position of the Balkans is considered in relation to the goals of Atlantism and the functioning of radical Islamist groups, while in the fifth, concluding part, it is estimated that the kind of pact between these two projections is in mutual interest.
