Насиље у породици дуго није било идентификовано ван „брачних обавеза” и чак се сматрало нормалним, као што се и данас сматра у многим културама. Временом је дошло до развоја свести, нарочито после 90-их година 20. века када су законодавства широм света почела да обраћају пажњу на овај вид насиља. Насиље над интимним партнерима није ограничено на брак ни на физичко и сексуално насиље, а ни на хетеросексуалне парове. Српско законодавство се све успешније бори да ухвати корак са осталима, угледајући се на прогресивне примере из околине.
