THE SOCIAL (DE)CONSTRUCTION OF GENDER IDENTITY
Keywords:
identity, gender, gender stratification, gender conflicts and movements, gender stereotypesAbstract
This paper presents an analytical deconstruction of identity categories that focus on the gender differences viewed as identity characteristics, forms of personal identification and social constructs. Special attention is devoted to the analysis of gender identity in the context of the theory of gender stratification, analysis of socio-cultural processes and mechanisms through which gender is „embedded” in the individual, interactional and institutional dimensions, as well as the ways in which gender inequality and gender stereotypes are created within each of these dimensions. One of the key aspects of conservation, persistence, and changes in gender systems are widely distributed hegemonic cultural beliefs and ideas about gender whose effects are most evident in the „socio-relational context”.
