Abstract

Theoretical and empirical research on power relations and patterns of decision-making in the contemporary family have been the hallmark of sociological literature on marriage and family in the last few decades. The above undertakings are grouped under the umbrella of the resource theory of “family and marital power.” In line with this theory, a number of sociologists of the family tried to conceptualize family and marital dynamics using basic principles of the exchange theory and the concept of resources. The paper presents the results of dealing with this issue that have produced a number of controversies that are still, due to the lack of empirical and comparative research, preventing accurate assessment of the relevance of the concept of resources applied to the field of marriage and family. Some of the most prominent, and also the most controversial undertakings in this field of study, such as the concept of explicit marital negotiation, the concept of marriage (in) stability and the concept of marriage alternatives will also be shown.
