Abstract

By using quantitative and qualitative content analysis of the front pages of Serbian daily newspapers during years 2015, 2016. and the first quarter of 2017 (Politika, Danas, Večernje novosti, Blic, Kurir, Alo and Informer), the authors indicate typical narratives that are used in representation of the Migrant crisis. Comparation is important for identifying the change in discourse, as this indicates political determination of the authorities, but also degree of acceptance by other relevant factors. Unlike the initial reporting, which was underline human and security dimension of the migration, since the beginning of the spring 2016 there has been a decrease in writing intensity on this subject. Also, from the beginning of that year, there has been a slight qualitative change in narratives in which the emphasis is placed on the possibility of permanently retaining the migrants in Serbia, with support of the European Union. That was analyzed through the economic aspect, as well as the possibility of preventing demographic collapse through the settlement of refugees. Unlike tabloids, which are persistently appealing to sensationalism, xenophobia and fear of Islamic radicalism, quality daily newspapers promotes the human aspect of the Migrant crisis. Although migrants do not share such orientation, from European countries we have seen messages about plans to additionally control their inflows. In that situation, the countries on The Balkan route are under increasing pressure.
