Abstract

The author defends the thesis that the European Union in its evolution actually developed successively two different projects. The first relied on the idea of concluding international agreements between sovereign nation states and contributed to the removal of obstacles to the free flow of capital, people and ideas. The later project of European integration is guided by the idea of complete homogenization of life and results in the creation of supranational institutions. The introduction of the euro, the unified European legislation and the creation of the Brussels bureaucracy hardly justified the earlier expectations. The paper discusses the effects of these changes and points to many unwanted and even dangerous consequences of such a process.
