Аутори указују на одређене елементе Диркемове и Гумпловицеве рецепције Спенсеровог еволуционизма. За Диркема и Гумпловица је Спенсер представљао незаобилазну тачку у изградњи њихових социолошких теорија, без обзира на све међусобне разлике. У погледу схватања односа између појединца и друштва нису прихватили Спенсерову позицију (методолошког) индивидуализма. Последњи увид је занимљив јер је Спенсер на особен начин интегрисао индивидуализам и еволуционизам у својој теорији.
