Abstract

Besides the geographic proximity, the three Benelux countries often have a role of mediators and compromise countries at the EU level. Thus, the politicians of these countries have high upward mobility to higher officies of the Union, and three politicians of these countries are leading candidates of their party groups in these elections. Also, fragmentation of the electorate and parliamentary party representation is one of the common features that will mark the work of the new European Parliament and the new European Commission after the 2019 elections. The results of the elections have brough some surprises and mild shift on the right, primarily in the Netherlands.
