FROM ANCIENT PANONIAN CAPITAL TO MODERN CITY – TRANSFORMATION OF URBAN MORPHOLOGY OF SREMSKA MITROVICA

Excellent geographical position enabled Sremska Mitrovica to develop and grow more than 2000 years.The city developed outwards, from the core to the periphery, attaining its design throughout centuries. Although the area occupied only a small part of today's city, even then Sirmium had an urban look. In the mid 18th century, from medieval town, Mitrovica gradually transformed into a city. The process of urbanization, the metamorphosis of a rural area, started in the fifties of the 18th century. Compared with the previous stages in the origin of the city, todaySremska Mitrovica has grown into a modern center of the municipality, with modern residential areas, business zones and preserved old core. The city is expanded territorially. The aim of this paper is to present the morphological development of Sremska Mitrovica over time in a more complex and faithful way.
