Abstract

The notion of profession is used in Serbian language interchangeably with notions occupation and job. However, the content of the notion of profession is such that it refers only to those occupations that meet the criterions of expertise, responsibility and corporativism. Author asserts that it is necessary to supplement the content of the notion of profession with morality, understood as striving towards an inherently good goal, but also argues that it is a foundation for all three characteristics. By supplementing the explicit content of the notion, we are reducing its range, leaving all those who fail to meet the criteria outside of the notion of profession. Evaluation of quality of work of a member of any profession (policemen, judges, military officers, doctors, priests, politicians, journalists, etc.) must be preconditioned with his identification as a legitimate member of that profession. Intruders in professions represent a direct peril for entire society, and this paper aims to clarify and supplement the criteria for defining professions with the criteria of necessary morality. This paper particularly addresses the area of politics, where the criteria of morality is especially complex, given the fact that different ethical theories provide different sets of tools for moral evaluation of actions in politics.
