SECURITIZATION OF CYBER AND ENVIRONMENTAL THREATS: THE ANALYSIS OF APPROACHES
Keywords:
securitization, environmental threats, cyber threats, methodological approachesAbstract
This paper presents theoretical considerations as well as the findings of empirical studies on securitization of cyber and environmental security threats. The overall aim of the paper is to describe and comparatively analyze how the authors have examined the securitization of these threats. After presenting the basic principles of securitization theory and the theoretical problem, the relevant empirical studies of cyber and environmental security threats are presented, with particular emphasis on methodological approaches in research. Then a comparative analysis is presented with respect to five criteria: research approach, methods, data sources for analysis, type of research and audience. In the final part of the paper, a discussion up the results indicates that the securitization of environmental and cyber threats correspond with four of the criteria, while the fifth - the element of the audience - does not correspond at all.
