Abstract

From December 1918 until the autumn of 1919, the Kingdom of Italy, in line with to the so-called Badoglio plan, conducted intensive intelligence-subversive activities with the aim of breaking up the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Based on the principles of divide et impera, the plan entailed breaking up the newly formed state by stirring up interethnic and religious clashes between the Southern Slavs. The plan was carried out by the Italian military intelligence service which found the firmest stronghold in Croatian separatistic movement. Although it did not succeed in its primary objective, the Italian activities had contributed considerably to the rise of Croatian separatism and the destabilisation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. When Benito Mussolini came to power, Badoglio’s plan became the fascists’ main political factor in dismantling the state of the Southern Slavs, by fuelling interethnic and religious strife, mainly by supporting the Croatian separatist movement.
