Abstract

The paper focuses on the analysis of the cultural dimension of drug and alcohol abuse, addressing questions such as: what are cultural and identity characteristics of substance abuse in the 21st century and can they be discussed within well-known theoretical and methodological frameworks? In pursuit of these answers, which are extremely important for therapeutic and socio-cultural practices in treatment and rehabilitation of abusers of (non) illicit substances, it is necessary to consider the continuity of cultural significance of abuse of alcohol and narcotics over time, as well as very intense dynamics of cultural change, identity and symbolic messages they carry in contemporary culture. Improvement of cultural competence as required knowledge and practice for both parties in the process is demonstrated through work of the American Health Organization and the team for improvement of treatment of psychoactive substance abuse. In this sense, the paper presents a proposal for introduction of more innovative approaches in research and treatment of abusers, which will focus on understanding of socio-cultural aspects of their choices.
