Abstract

Organized crime is a complex and in many ways specific criminal phenomenon, which represents enormous threat for legal order and democratic institutions of a country, but also for the entire international community. The danger which it entails is not included in specific criminal activities but much more in possibilities to influence, either directly or indirectly, government decision making in the fields of economy and politics, even the international relations as a whole. Powerful criminal organizations, as representatives of organized crime, are present in all parts of the world; they act globally and achieve huge illegal profits. Organized crime today is in the focus of interest of all countries respectively, but also of the entire international community, which is rapidly attempting to find adequate manners, methods and assets to fight it. In its contents, this paper points to the largest and most powerful criminal organizations within the organized crime milieu, and also highlights the contemporary characteristics and future trends of organized crime worldwide.
