Abstract

Multiple causes can be identified which led to the appearance and the success of the NSDAP. Focus of this paper is upon the role that the social conflicts have played in Germany during the first decades of the 20th century. However, it should be acknowledged that other factors, such as the historical development of the nation and economic misfortunes played a significant role as well, therefore these factors are also incorporated. Furthermore, the Treaty of Versailles has created a fertile basis for the emergence of Hitler’s party, since it stirred great feelings of hatred among the German people. The most important social conflicts that can be identified in the period are economical and social; there were clashes between the different classes in society. There were also political conflicts between the several political groups in society, with communists on the left and the NSDAP and other rightextremist parties on the right. Some segments of Lewis Coser’s theory of social conflict will be used in this paper to explain the nature of the social conflicts and its outcome.
