Abstract

With the intention to analyze if the United States can be called representative democracy, the author analyzes several aspects which can help us to look objectively at the situation in the American society in recent decades.Taking into focus the state mainly seen as an example of a developed democratic system, we emphasize the question of feasibility of the basic assumptions of democracy and thus examine the very nature of representative democracy at the same time.

In order to do so, we are interpreting individual issues and how government responds to the pluralism of interests and opinions in society, when it comes to the vital issues for the citizens. This leads us to the analysis of sociocultural context in which we can see numerous differences among the citizens, and also points the importance of the issue of the justification of the "Cultural war" existence thesis. The one that is about dilemma whether is that an American reality or we can conclude that differences about the important sociocultural issues are primarily fueled by the interest-oriented elites, which if necessary encourage that polarization, especially during political campaigns.

Within the analyzed aspects, as the most important we can observe the relationship between the impact of economic and cultural factors, concluding that cultural not suppressed economic, but that it is a co-existence of those two types of factors. The conclusion indicating the necessity of reforms, which must be implemented at the same time with the education of citizens and by changing roles of other important stakeholders.
