THE RIGHT TO POLITICAL REPRESENTATION OF WOMEN INTHE COUNTRIES OF THE EUROPEAN UNION

The under-representation of women in political life is a major global problem. Although many international documents provide different standards which should ensure equal representation of women and men in public and political life, the right to political representation of women is still not fully realized. With proper definition of the right to political representation of women, this paper will show that the viewpoint on the guarantee of equal treatment of individuals is incorrect, and that is necessary to introduce specific measures in order to establish gender equality in public and political life. Special attention will be paid to the most important factors of the electoral system which should ensure the equal representation of women and men in parliament as well as the analysis of internal legal system of the three countries: Sweden, France and Slovenia.
