APORIES OF MEDIA IN SUPPORTING THE POLICY OF CRIME SUPRESSION AND PROTECTION OF THE RULE OF LAW

Abstract

Media have dominant influence of public opinion forming on all relevant social topics, including crime as a negative social occurrence. Majority of stereotypes and wrong understanding of certain aspects of the crime phenomenon are in good measure a consequence of media presentation of these occurrences. Therefore it is necessary to research the mechanism of media handling of information about crime, with special attention to whether the media presentation differs from its real proportions. It can be said that behind many media reports there is a need for sensationalist presentation of certain forms of crime, mostly violent, and one of the possible explanations might for such approach might be the need for more profit. With such approach to the problem of crime media often jeopardize normal functioning of judicial organs. Borders of relation between the right of freedom of press and presumption of innocence shall also be explored. Phenomenon of moral panic, which is more and more attractive to authors over last decades is tied exactly to the problem of media constructed reality which mostly does not reflect the real state of things.
