Abstract

In international relations theories, states are one of the most frequent starting points in theoretical exploration. Moreover, states are perceived as the main actors in the international system. Nevertheless, in this research the author endeavors to present a radically diverse approach on this subject, represented by one of the most influential social constructivists, Nicholas Onuf.

Therefore, Onuf’s thought will be analyzed in order to reach two mean goals of this research- definition of state and explication of, according to Onuf’s understanding the key actors in international relations - institutions. So, firstly, the authors attempt to represent the role and significance that Onuf attributes to state, through the prism of modernity, in the context of civil society (on European example, then and now). And secondly, the authors aim to make conclusions about different possible interpretations as a result of Onuf’s presumptions. After that, in this paper will be presented Onuf’s theorizing about the institutions, including the argumentation used to affirm his theoretical position on institutions as a concept central both to international relations and social relations in general. Inevitable, the term “nation” will be elaborated, primarily from the aspect of the traditional- modern opposition.

In conclusion, in spite of the observed flaws, Onuf’s crucial contribution, embodied in his premises about the institutions, as a novelty in the field of international relations, will be indicated. Eventually, the authors suggest that Onuf’s approach, if elaborated in future researches, has a potential to lead to some new perspectives, inspiring further theoretical debate on this subject.
