Abstract

The author in the text analyses the position of participatory democracy in democracy theories and typology of mechanisms of participation of citizens in political decision making as well as methods of assessment of the level of development of participatory democracy in order to determine theoretical identity of participatory democracy in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). The problem of adequate theoretical and analytic frame and universal typology of mechanisms of citizens’ participation in political decision making represent the key obstacle to his analysis. Starting from the typology of mechanisms of citizens’ participation developed by Rowe and Frewer and using a holistic approach to assessing participatory democracy, the author analyses the basic characteristics of participatory democracy in BiH and presents his stand on its nature and character.
