THE IMPACT OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF IT TECHNOLOGIES ON OVERCOMING THE PROBLEMS OF LEGACY INFORMATION SYSTEMS

After the information system is put into use, the process of maintaining it begins. Long-term maintenance of the system leads to disruption of its initially designed structure and performance decline. This causes the information system once fully usable, unable to respond to changes, ie. becomes a legacy system. The cost of maintaining legacy systems is high and there is a high risk of removing them from use. On the other hand, they are very important in conducting business operations, but due to their problems, organizations see them as barriers to business. Their inflexibility is especially pronounced in the modern world, which is characterized by constant changes, which make legacy systems a serious factor limiting growth and progress. The constant development of IT technologies in all its forms gives certain possibilities to overcome the problems of legacy systems. To what extent this will be possible, in addition to the application of technology itself, determines the adoption and application of new knowledge and concepts related to the design and restructuring of the existing legacy system.
