MARGARET GIBERT: „JOINT COMMITMENT“ MODEL OF POLITICAL COMMUNITY
Keywords:
„joint commitment“, contractualism, obligationAbstract
In this paper, we will review one of the contemporary theories of the social contract, suggested by the British philosopher Margaret Gilbert. A key concept of her theory is "joint commitment". By that concept Gilbert wants to explain both: a genesis of political community and a validity of political obligation. Into the joint commitment model genesis and validity are connected on the fundamental level, and there is no possibility to understand the strong proposition of validity of obligation without analytical explanation of its creation. The concept is undoubtedly a significant contribution to contemporary political theory and philosophy, though certain implications of the theory seem counterintuitive.
