Abstract

Populism is a phenomenon that has become more and more widespread in daily politics over the recent years. Populism is most commonly referred to by the media, placing it terminologically as a derogatory political orientation, or in political discourse, associating it with vain rhetoric and demagogy. They also use it to disparage political opponents. It has been portrayed as an antipode to the elites of the ruling establishment, liberal democracy, pluralism and more. However, the theory of the origin and emergence of populism is often a marginalized topic. Historical frameworks through which the political phenomenon of populism had to pass are very long and require extensive research of their nature. The development of populist thought has been present throughout the centuries, from its beginnings in Rome to the end of the 20th century, when modern populist thought was shaped. Due to the inability to encompass all movements and states, the paper analyzes the historical figures who had the most influence and who represented the building block of society at a given time. The countries in which the movements were analyzed are: Roman Republic / Empire, Holy Roman Empire, Russian Empire, German Empire and Republic, French Kingdom / Republic / Empire, Italian Kingdom. Research methods used in the paper are combined, mostly analytical and comparative research methods. The aim of the paper is to create a unique view of the movements that shaped populist thought, to clearly define the nature of the development of populist movements throughout history and their change during historical epochs. The assumption is that populism was variable according to the era it was in, as well as that the movements deviated from the idea of democracy for the purpose of establishing a regime of sustainability of government.
