Abstract

This paper analyses the relationship between energy cooperation among certain European countries and their subsequent wider political association. Special atention has been paid to energy cooperation among states existing within the Cold War blocs as well as to the gradual development of energy cooperation among the countries of Eastern and Western Europe.

Bearing in mind that there are two agreements regarding energy, the Agreement on the European Community for Coal and Steel and the Treaty of Rome which founded the European Atomic Energy Community, fundamentally embedded in the European Union (EU); as well as the fact that energy cooperation was one of the most important issues within the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance, this paper presents the assumption that in the period ahead of us natural gas will become the basis for a new agreement among European nations and geo-energy will be crucial for the creation of a political axis Paris – Berlin – Moscow ie. the integration of Europe from the Atlantic to the Urals as once promoted by Charles de Gaulle.
