NATIONAL IDENTITY OF THE ROMA IN THE EUROPEAN INTEGRATION PROCESS

Due to unfavorable social status and material deprivation, cultural, educational, economic and political marginalization, the Roma were not sufficiently affected by social mobility, which would have a positive effect on their status and their own national identity. The permanent changes of national affiliation of Roma are result of assimilation process and ethnic mimicry, so the Roma often declared as members of some other nationality. Also, the changes of ethnic identity were characteristic of Rome and had a great influence on their population growth. In recent years, the Roma are increasingly fighting for their own national identity, they have no territorial claims, but they advocate for integration into their environment, preservation of national and cultural characteristics and improving their material, social, and political status. The Roma minority represents a serious challenge to the minority policy of the Republic of Serbia on their way to their European integration.
