GABRIEL TARD’S THEORETICAL CONTRIBUTION TO SOCIOLOGY OF ORGANISATIONS: FROM THE THEORY OF IMITATION TO THE IDEA OF ORGANISATIONAL ISOMORPHISM

The paper sets out to identify certain theoretical contributions of Gabriel Tard to sociology of organisations. The starting point of the analysis is to understand the social context out of which this theorist emerges, in order to comprehend the causes of the marginalisation he was subject to during his lifetime, as well as the growing interest in his theory in the last twenty years. Afterwards, some light is shed on Tard's view of society, which is important for understanding his theories but which can also be quite interesting with regard to sociology of organisations. Finally, neoinstitutionalistic understanding of isomorphism is presented, the basis of which includes certain elements of Tard's theory of imitation along with his understanding of rest and work ratio, which represent a direct contribution to sociology of work and sociology of organisations. The basic assumption of the paper is that there is a need to put some focus on the ideas of classical theorists of sociology that have nearly been forgotten. This need arises from the tendency of sociology, as well as sociology of organisations, to create new concepts and new approaches while analysing the society and organisations.
