The paper deals with the theoretical controversies that arise when trying to determining the causes of violence in sports. Special attention has been devoted to the explanation of hooliganism, which represents public violence at sportevents. Regarding the genesis of violence in sport throughout history, the paper made comparative analyses from ancient times in which they conceive Olympics, to modern society. This comparative analysis of violence in sports through history has shown that, regardless of the level of civilization development , violence (sometimes less, sometimes more) immanent sports audience. Depending on the theoretical approach, the causes of violent behavior in public sporting events may be different, but the author is of the opinion that there is no monocausal explanation and that all social phenomena inclusive and hooliganism should be seen in the constellation of social, economic, political and historical events.
