Abstract

The disintegration of Yugoslavia and the internal armed conflict set a challenge to the international community to deal with a specific crisis environment in which the conflicting interaction does not occur directly between countries but within them, through various forms of sectarian violence between local actors. In accordance with practice in international politics since the end of World War II a key role in the regulation of the conflict belonged to the UN. Based on the new strategic concept, in the context of the changes caused by the end of the Cold War, NATO has emerged as a regional player with the pretension to establish itself as a guarantor of security in this part of Europe. From the beginning in 1993, the Clinton administration was actively involved in the peace process in Bosnia and Herzegovina and lead the international coalition campaign of air strikes in order to impose peace, within the strategy of assertive multilateralism. The campaign is implemented in its full capacity in 1995, and the Army of the United States arrived in Bosnia and Herzegovina just after the Dayton Peace Agreement.
