J. F. COOPER AND CONSERVATIVE DEFENSE OF DEMOCRACY
Keywords:
Cooper, American Democrat, gentleman, demagogue, publicAbstract
In this article, the author analyzes the most important political essay of the famous American writer James Fenimore Cooper. The American Democrat was published in 1838 as an attempt to expose the principles of American constitutionality. In it, Cooper gave a still-useful model of the conservative defense of democracy. The author analyzes the basic features of this model, such as hierarchy, gentleman, demagogue and family. He also draws attention to the extremely modern methodology that Cooper uses and to some important insights that are still insufficiently understood in political theory, such as the openness of democracy for malign and dangerous influences of foreign factors.
