LE RIFORME DI MARIA TERESA D’AUSTRIA: MOTIVI E OBIETTIVI DIUN’AZIONE PRAGMATICA

Questo saggio indaga i motivi e gli obiettivi delle vaste riforme realizzate nel XVIII secolo da Maria Teresa d’Austria, l’unica donna ascesa al trono nella storia degli Asburgo, che ereditò dal padre Carlo VI uno Stato indebolito e arretrato rispetto alle potenze europee dell’epoca. Osteggiata dai suoi potenti vicini, che non le riconoscevano il diritto di ereditare le terre degli Asburgo in quanto donna, Maria Teresa dimostrò di possedere il pragmatismo e il carattere necessari per varare un ambizioso piano teso a riformare radicalmente l’Impero d’Austria. Facendo leva sul coraggio di avveduti ministri del rango di Haugwitz, Kaunitz e Van Swieten, Maria Teresa tentò di riformare ogni aspetto dello Stato. In questo saggio analizzeremo vari aspetti e problemi delle riforme promosse da Maria Teresa nell’intento di capire in che misura esse ebbero successo.
