Abstract

The success of each organization depends on the motivation of its employees. Employee motivation is a key determinant of individual and organizational performance, both private and public. The activity of public companies is of general interest, and their flexibility and productivity depends on the knowledge and expertise of employees. Numerous studies in this area have shown that the motivation of employees in public companies is conditioned by many factors. The subject of this paper is the analysis of the motivation of employees in public companies in the Republic of Serbia and is part of the research that covers the impact of organizational behavior on the organizational commitment of employees. The research was conducted by an anonymous survey on a sample of 508 employees in public companies in the City of Belgrade. Most of the respondents believe that the biggest motivating factor is financial stimulation and then the level of earnings, which indicates the importance of direct material compensation in public companies. Non-material motivation factors have proven to be less significant, while as the most significant are the good relationships with the superiors. This research can help managers by acting on identified motivation factors to influence employee loyalty and their commitment to the organization.
