Abstract

The subject framework of this paper is the causes of radicalization that lead to violent extremism and terrorism, especially those in prison, and policies, strategies, programs, instruments and measures aimed at preventing radicalization. Therefore, the paper discusses the causes of radicalization and their reflections on the prison system, the security challenges posed by terrorists in prison, the assessment of the risk of radicalization in prison, the theoretical assumptions and the assessment of the practices of some modalities to respond to the challenges of radicalization in prison, prison regimes, and some evaluation criteria the success of deradicalization measures. It has been concluded that, in addition to direct preventative function within the prison itself, deradicalization programs can gain a proactive streak through a broader social and political level – through their range must not be overstated. However, efficiency issues (the technique of successfully achieving the set goals) must be turned into the question of the effectiveness of the program (achieving concrete results in changing attitudes and values of treated persons, with adequately defined goals and resources).
