In this paper, the author deals with the development of Christian democracy after the Second World War in Europe. The emphasis is on the functioning of key political parties. The emergence and development of the Italian party Christian Democracy and the German Christian Democratic Union have been specifically addressed. The author shows how the programs, structure and orientation of these parties have changed. The second part of the article deals with the functioning and problems of key HD parties after 1990, such as the CDU, the Austrian OVP and the Dutch CDA. Finally, a brief overview of the history of the European framework for the co-operation of these parties is given. It led to the formation of the EPP, which is still the most important group in the European Parliament, and has been keeping the place of the President of the European Commission for two decades.
