ECOLOGICAL CRISIS AS THE CRISIS OF SPIRIT, AND POSSIBLE WAYS TO ACHIEVE SUSTAINABILITY
Keywords:
ecology, sustainability, perennialism, symbolism, sacralization of natureAbstract
Accustomed to seeing himself as the master of nature, man in the developed world inherits the Newton-Cartesian paradigm in which living organisms and all phenomena are viewed as mechanisms. Thus estranged and alienated from nature, man not only caused great ecological disasters, but also lost much of his inner balance, health and sense of meaning. Restoring human integrity and saving a declining living environment are proving to be very difficult tasks in an industrial society, steeped in a consumerist mentality. Numerous authors believe that we need a fundamental change in values and behavior in order for environmental awareness to develop and to stop the negative trend of destroying nature. This paper will attempt to analyze one of the possible directions of these changes, namely, the return to the values of the world's major religions as a basis for overcoming the ecological crisis. This return will be viewed through the prism of Perennial Philosophy and its wellknown claim about the transcendent unity of religions.
