NIKOLAI BERDYAEV: CYCLISM AND THE CHRISTIAN MEANING OF HISTORY
Keywords:
Nikolai Berdyaev, cyclism, Spengler, the meaning of history, the new Middle AgesAbstract
The Paper examines the attitude of the Russian religious philosopher Nikolai Berdyaev toward theories of modern historical cyclism. The first part of the Paper analyzes Berdyaev's relation to Spengler's “cultural morphology” (outlined by Berdyaev in "Faust's Pre-mortal Thoughts") - more specifically his partial critical apprehension of Spengler's conception of cultures as living organisms. In the second part of the Paper, Berdyaev's "revaluated cyclism" is placed within the framework of his view of the meaning of history – a subjective version of the Christian view of the philosophy of history. The third, final part of the Paper critically refers to Berdyaev's view of understanding cultural dynamics and the desire for a "new Middle Ages".
