Abstract

Physical violence in the population of high school students is an important phenomenon that requires systematic monitoring and research. Because of the seriousness and severity of consequences that physical violence can have, it is necessary to create an efficient system of social response to this violence which must constitute the basis of scientific research and prevention programs based on them.

Research on a sample of 488 students was conducted in four secondary schools in Belgrade. The sample of students is tested with a special Questionnaire on student behavior, which included 27 variables from the family, school and peer environments of students. Physical violence was examined with four variables, namely: 1) Participation in fights at school, 2) Participation in fights outside the school, 3) Hitting, slapping, kicking students at the school, 4) Hitting, slapping, kicking students outside of school. Data analysis showed that in fights, as a worst form of violence, participates 65.5% of male students and 24.0% of female; that participation in fights outside the school is more frequent than in school. Also, data analysis showed that violence in school and outside school are closely associated with the status of victim students and their gender, the presence of family members involved in crime, running of students away from home, physical punishment in the family, poor school performance, inattention in class, the tendency to cheat in school work, changing schools due to government, socio pathological behavior and crime in the peer group.
