Abstract

In this work the author deals with the history of the concept of extremism, presuppositions of its development and ways how it is used. By doing so, the roots of the concept of extremism are traced back to ancient Greece and Aristotle’s ethics of measure. After that we follow Aristotelian tradition to the French Revolution, which represents one of the key events in the history of extremism. Postrevolutionary period brought up the formation of the extremism concept in the circle of liberal bourgeoisie and in accordance with it the first definition of extremism. Also, during that period extremism more and more enters political speech in the same time supplanting the other notions such as ultrism. After that, the author moves on to analyze perceptions of extremism in ”the age of extremes” between the two world wars. The last part of the paper is dedicated to the postwar development of extremism.
