LABELING THEORY – TO THE CONCEPTUALIZATION OF STIGMA

This paper analyzes the nature of labeling theory as one of the most influential theories in the study of deviance. Special attention is devoted to identifying the numerous components of socio-psychological nature whose interaction results in the process of stigmatization of individuals and social groups, as well as the concept of structural discrimination which takes the form of institutional practices that deprivilegde stigmatized groups even in the absence of individual prejudice and discrimination.
